Soroptimist International South West Pacific
A global network of service
Soroptimist International (SI) is a world wide organisation for women in management and the professions working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women. Soroptimists work at all levels of civil society, local, national and international, and are involved with a wide spectrum of women's concerns.
SI South West Pacific (SISWP) is one of four Soroptimist Federations globally, and currently includes 13 countries in the Asia Pacific Region. These countries are: Australia, Cambodia, Fiji, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands and Thailand.
A global network of friendship
Soroptimists work together in a spirit of friendship and fun to make the world a better place for all. Members are encouraged to be aware of and involved in local and global issues. A Friendship Link system encourages joint projects between clubs in developing countries by clubs in developed countries. Soroptimist membership opens the doors to opportunities for international experiences and friendships.
Working in partnership with others
SI works closely with other Non Government Organisations (NGOs) and authorities for positive social and economic changes that improve the lives of women, children and families. The organisation has General Consultative Status with the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and has representatives at many meetings of its agencies and organisations in UN Centres throughout the world.
Other Federations
The other Soroptimist Federations are: SI Americas, SI Europe and SI Great Britain & Ireland.

Sanctuary Shelter for Women
SISWP Federation Project
Fiji 2016 – 2018
Building of Women’s Shelters to provide:
-
Temporary accommodation and safety for women and children who are victims of violence, natural disasters or family death.
-
Counselling and medical assistance where needed.
-
Literacy and skills training to empower women with the ability to contribute economically to their families and communities.
-
Advocacy against family violence.
WHY THIS PROJECT?
-
This project reflects the voice of Soroptimist International of the South West Pacific and its goals and objectives
-
Fiji is the 4th in the world in terms of violence.
-
It is very prone to natural disasters; cyclones in particular
-
There is a severe lack of shelters in Fiji and victims are often brought back to their homes where the offender can easily have access and re-offend.
-
These emergency shelters will be available to the victims until it is safe for them to seek another place to stay or go back home

"Walk the Talk"
This is a programme of the South West Pacific Federation designed to raise awareness of, and advocate against all forms of violence against women and children.
We observe “16 Days of Activism” between November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and December 10 (International Human Rights Day). During this time clubs conduct events and hold displays in their local communities to raise awareness.
.
-
The Devonport club combines with other women’s service clubs to stage a WTT event, inviting the public to join us. We meet at Roundhouse Park and walk to the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial. Leading up to White Ribbon Day, displays are set up at various venues in the city to raise awareness and advertise the event.
